Internet Websites are not always Dependable - Part Two

A publication or update date is also a sign of a professional site that regards itself as a reliable source for information. However, keep in mind that simply because information is recent, it is not necessarily accurate.

Site design also gives clues to reliability, as can the writing style of the articles. A badly-designed site with broken images or unprofessional design may not be the best source of information.

Similarly, a site with poor grammar, spelling, or syntax must also be questioned. Sites do experience technical difficulties, though, and this is something that must be taken into account when assessing a site for reliability.

Sourcing is a strong indicator of reliability. With the advent of keyword article marketing, more and more articles are being written to attract search engines. Some of these articles are certainly reliable, but what about people who write yet have no expertise at all in the subject matter. A quality article will contain sources for the material, quotes from professionals in the field, and footnotes for quoted sources.

Finally, information about and contact information for the author is the strongest indicator of reliability available. Authors who are willing to take credit for their work and invite correspondence with readers are confident in the quality of their information. Besides, contact information allows a researcher to ask the author additional questions that may not have been covered in the original article.

Internet Websites are not always Dependable - Part One

The Internet is an astoundingly inexhaustible resource for research, but unless a user knows how to look for signs of reliability, the information gathered from the Internet may not be accurate or of the highest quality available. Some sites don’t update their information often and when this happens, the main facts can become outdated very quickly.

All of us; professionals, students, and the public are turning to the Internet as our resource for research for work, school, and home, even in handling such delicate matters as investments, bank accounts, and so forth. There is the perception and belief that everything contained in the Internet is fact, whereas this is not always the case. You can search various websites and yet get the same recycled, rephrased, pirated information. You can search seemingly similar sites which turn out to be worlds apart.

A sure-fire way to make sure you are getting reliable information from a trustworthy source is by simply checking the site's domain name. Since there are no restrictions on who may apply for a .com, .net, or .org domain, you cannot always depend on sites like these.

Sites with .edu and .gov as their domains though are restricted to government agencies and educational institutions, and as such information gathered from them are more reliable and authoritative. Note, though, that some educational institutions allow students to publish pages under the .edu domain, and the institution may not vet that information.

There are millions of Internet pages and some have been around for a very long time. These are the so-called dead websites littering the Internet whose owners have either forgotten, grown tired of maintaining, or completely abandoned. Whenever you access a website, checking its publication date to know that the information you're getting is up-to-date.
